Flagstone Patio With Outdoor Steps & Large Retaining Wall in Glen Carbon, IL

When our client in Glen Carbon, IL, reached out to us, they wanted to maximize the use of their backyard. To get a good idea of their goals, we had a consultation with them. We discussed their vision and inspected the area they wanted to upgrade. Their house has a back door where they wanted to put a new patio to sit and spend time outside, which we built from high-quality flagstone to achieve a more rustic look. However, their yard sloped on either side of the patio area, so we rectified it with retaining walls, as well as outdoor steps to connect the space off to the side by their pool. Finally, with everything complete, they now have a usable outdoor living space that they can enjoy to the fullest!

We Started With a Consultation to Discuss Our Client's Goals for Their Backyard

The first step of this outdoor living project was to meet with our client for a consultation. During this initial meeting, we discussed their goals for their backyard and inspected the area to plan out how we'd bring it to life. They wanted to add a patio in front of the house's back door, next to the pool area, so they could sit and spend time outside. On either side of this area, their yard was on a slope. While they had an existing retaining wall along one side, it was clear that we'd need to redo it and extend it further out, as well as add one on the other side to hold the soil back. Once we had a good idea of their expectations for this project, we got to work on bringing it to fruition!

The Next Step of This Project Was to Build the Flagstone Patio

Once all the details of this project were hammered out, the next step was to build the patio! We used high-quality Black Hills Rustic flagstones to construct it, which have a more natural, rustic aesthetic. These stones blend various earthy tones ranging from tan to darker brown, fitting in perfectly with their surroundings. The patio begins at the concrete landing underneath the house's overhang and extends along the side of our client's pool, giving them new space to use.

The Retaining Walls & Outdoor Steps Were Installed to Complete This Project

With our client's patio finished, we installed the retaining walls on either side to hold back the soil. Belgard Brisa stones were used to build them, complementing the earthy tones of the patio and blending in seamlessly with the landscape. Additionally, we incorporated Black Hills Rustic natural stone outdoor steps into the side closest to their pool to connect that raised area with the new flagstone patio. With these other elements complete, there's a more cohesive flow between different sections of their outdoor living space. Now, our client can make the most of their backyard and enjoy these new additions for years to come!
