Outdoor Living Space Project in Troy, IL - Patio, Pergola, Retaining Wall & More

When our clients in Troy, IL, reached out to our team, they wanted to transform their outdoor living space. Initially, they had only a designated area underneath an overhang of the house to host gatherings and spend time outside. However, they wanted to expand that into their empty backyard, as they had the room to do so. We got to work on making that happen, beginning this project by installing the patio to serve as the foundation for the seating wall and pergola. Then, we constructed a retaining wall and outdoor steps alongside the house, leading to the backyard for more convenient access. Finally, we put the finishing touches on this project with fresh sod, landscape beds around the patio area and steps, and plants for touches of greenery.

We began this outdoor living project by installing the patio, seating wall, and pergola.

The first step of this outdoor living project was to install the patio, which would serve as the foundation of their newly transformed space. Our team used Belgard pavers in Brittany Beige for a more earthy, subtle look. After that, we constructed the seating wall from Belgard pavers in Brittany Beige to match the patio, with two columns on each end; we used Tumbled Black Diamond for the column caps and the top of the wall to add darker contrast. Then, we installed the statement piece of their new outdoor living space: a pergola, which we built from 12x12 cedar wood to bring natural, earthy tones to the area.

Then, we constructed retaining walls and outdoor steps alongside the house.

The next step of this project was to construct two retaining walls from natural stone, with one next to where the outdoor steps would go and the other on the opposite end of the house. Following that, we got to work on the steps that lead from the side of the house to the backyard, making it easier to navigate since the land is sloped. Our clients wanted to keep a cohesive, complementary appearance with all the new additions, so we used Black Hills Rustic slabs for those steps.

The final step of this project was to add the finishing touches, including sod, landscape beds, and plants.

Once we installed the hardscape features, our team began working on the final step of this outdoor living project - adding the finishing touches. We installed a landscape bed around the patio and seating wall area, then another along the outdoor steps and side of the house where the two retaining walls are. We used Black Hills Rustic natural stone to border both and filled them with an Iowa river rock ground cover. Our team also added a Black Hills Rustic flagstone stepper for easy access from the landscape bed to the patio.

After that, our team laid fescue sod throughout their backyard space and around the side of the house. Then, we installed various plants in the landscape beds to break up the rocks and add touches of greenery, including boxwood and gold mop cypress shrubs and emerald green arborvitae trees. Now, our clients have a stunning outdoor living space and vibrant, lush grass, with landscape beds separating them for a clear distinction while seamlessly blending the hardscape features and softscape elements.
