Retaining Wall & Flagstone Patio Installation in Edwardsville, IL

Our clients in Edwardsville, IL had a bare, patchy area by their back steps, and they came to us looking for a way to improve that space. They saw the potential in this area and wanted to give it a function - and we helped them bring their idea to fruition. After consulting with them on what we could put there, we decided on a patio and retaining wall. Once they chose the materials they wanted to use for their new patio and retaining wall, it was time to prep the site for where it would go. We had to remove obstacles and grass that were in the way before grading the surface. Then, we got to work on the retaining wall that would outline the patio and give it a distinctive shape. The last step of this project was to install their flagstone patio.

First, we prepped the site for where their patio would go.

The first step of this project was to prep the site for where their patio would go. This area was small and located on a slope, so we had to plan out how to utilize as much space as possible. We decided to extend the construction down to the walkway, so we had to remove grass and debris from the area. Then, we graded the surface, which helped level out the space so the patio would be flat. We also removed the brick edging between the walkway and grass so that it wouldn't hinder the patio's aesthetics.

Next, we installed their retaining wall using blue sandstone.

Once the site was ready, we began installing their retaining wall. Our clients wanted to use a material that would distinctively outline the patio while still achieving the overall aesthetic they wanted. Fortunately, we had just what they were looking for: blue sandstone. They selected this type of stone because it is durable and beautiful, and we stacked them to build a retaining wall around where the patio would go. Next, we made steps in the center of their retaining wall so our clients could easily access the patio by putting a row of two-stacked stones in front of a row of three-stacked stones. They wanted a unique addition to tie the walkway into the steps, so we lined the bottom step with small grey river rocks.

The final step of this project was to install their patio.

With the retaining wall complete, the final step of this project was to install their patio. We used castle grey pattern flagstone for a unique yet sleek aesthetic, which went perfectly with the blue sandstone retaining wall. This material is highly durable and will withstand years of wear and tear, and our clients were absolutely thrilled with the way that their new patio turned out.
